Well, in this instance, the answer is that they don’t; they get better and play on!
Of course, we are referring to Rochdale’s current England internationals, Alan Thompson and Terry Williams, who are in the England over-75s walking football squad!
Before you get the impression that we’ve invented this, let us assure you—we haven’t.
Anybody who plays any sport dreams of representing the country at their chosen sport. For two Rochdale walking footballers, that dream came true when they were selected to play for the England O/75s by the International Walking Football Federation England. Terry Williams (Forward) and Alan Thompson (Goalkeeper), members of Rochdale AFC Walking Football Club, were selected to represent England in a recent four-nation tournament in Norway.
They were due to play Norway, Sweden and Wales, however Wales O/75s squad dropped out. The England squad had not played together before, and it showed in the four games played. After a creditable 0-0 draw against Sweden, they unfortunately lost the next three games 2-1.
In typical England fashion, they missed two penalties that would have given them two more draws. “We will use this fabulous experience” said Alan “as a stepping stone to the world championships in Sweden”.
Playing for England in an international tournament was a fantastic and emotional experience for both players. When the national anthems were played, “you felt it was just for you” said Terry.
Next on the list is the IWFF World Championships in Malmo Sweden in July, where Alan & Terry will be joined by another Rochdale walking footballer Dave Brooks, who will be in the O/65s squad. We wish all three players the best of luck in Sweden.
This is a great honour for all three players, but it is also costly, as they must pay for their travel and accommodation.
